How GPA is calculated

Unweighted GPA

Standard US 4.0 scale. Each letter grade converts to a point value: A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, and so on down to F = 0. Your final GPA is the average across every course, weighted by credits (so a 1.5-credit class counts more than a 0.5-credit class).

Weighted GPA

Adds bonus points for harder courses:

  • AP / IB courses: +1.0 to the base point
  • Honors courses: +0.5 to the base point
  • Regular courses: no bonus

Some schools use a 5.0 scale for weighted GPA. This calculator keeps the same 4.0 base and adds the bonus on top, so a transcript packed with AP courses can produce a weighted GPA above 4.0.

Which one do colleges look at?

Most US colleges recalculate your GPA using their own formula. They look at both your unweighted GPA and the rigor of your courses (which AP / Honors classes you took). PrepToDone shows how each individual college tends to weigh GPA — estimated where a school doesn't publish it.
