Buried in section C21 of Northeastern's official Common Data Set is the widest early-decision gap we've found in any US university filing: Early Decision applicants were admitted at 43%. Everyone else was admitted at 3.8%.
The raw counts, straight from the 2024–25 filing: 3,466 students applied ED; 1,492 were admitted. The full first-year pool that cycle was 98,425 applications and 5,133 admits — which means applicants outside the ED round were competing for what was left: 3,641 offers across 94,959 applications.
Divide it out and the ED round ran at 11.2× the rest-of-pool rate. For comparison, Cornell's same-filing gap is 1.49×. Northeastern isn't playing the same game as its peers — ED isn't an edge here, it's close to the whole door.
Why the gap is this extreme
Northeastern's overall acceptance rate collapsed from 18% in 2019 to 5.2% in 2024 — application volume at this school grew faster than almost anywhere in the country. When a university wants certainty about who will actually enroll amid 98,000 applications, binding commitment becomes enormously valuable to it. ED applicants deliver that certainty, and the admit rate pays for it.
That's also why this number is stable information rather than a loophole: the mechanism (yield protection at extreme volume) is structural. It doesn't vanish because people learn about it.
Read the caveat before you read the multiple
The 43% pool is not a random sample of applicants. Recruited athletes, legacy applicants, and other committed-early groups are concentrated in ED rounds — at every school, not just this one. Neither the 43% nor the 11.2× is a number you can apply to your own chances. What the filing supports is a claim about the round, not about you: at Northeastern, the binding round is where the school says yes.
One more honest note: these are the combined early-decision counts as Northeastern filed them — the CDS does not split ED I and ED II, so neither do we.
What this means for a real list
ED is a single card — you play it at exactly one school, and it binds you. The question is never "is Northeastern's ED rate good?" (it's the best we've measured); it's "is Northeastern the right school on your list to spend the card on?" A binding commitment at a school you'd rank third is a bad trade at any acceptance rate.
