Northeastern Now Admits 5.2% — Lower Than Most of the Ivy League (2026)
A decade ago, Northeastern was the school counselors filed under "strong but reachable." That label is badly out of date. According to the U.S. Department of Education's College Scorecard (2024), Northeastern University admits just 5.2% of applicants, with a middle-50% SAT range of 1440–1540 and an ACT range of 33–35.
To put 5.2% in perspective: it is lower than Dartmouth, Brown, and Penn (all near 5.4%) and well below Cornell (8.8%). A student treating Northeastern as a backup while calling an Ivy a "reach" has the difficulty ranking backwards.
What a 5.2% acceptance rate actually means
At 5.2%, roughly nineteen of every twenty applicants are turned away — and the pool applying to Northeastern is already crowded with strong students. The percentage alone understates the squeeze: you are not competing against the general senior class, but against a self-selected field that mostly already has high numbers.
Northeastern's rate collapsed because applications exploded. The SAT range is the fastest way to locate yourself:
- 1440 is Northeastern's 25th percentile — inside the admitted band, but at its lower edge. A quarter of admitted students scored below this.
- 1540 is the 75th percentile — near the top of the admitted class.
- Below ~1440, your test score becomes a headwind at a 5.2% admit rate, and the rest of the file has to carry more weight.
The ACT range of 33–35 tells the same story: a 33 is the lower edge, a 35 sits at the top. If your score lands inside these bands, testing is not what is standing between you and Northeastern — so your energy is better spent elsewhere in the application.
A note on the GPA number
You will find pages all over the internet quoting a precise Northeastern "GPA requirement." Be skeptical of them. Two things stand out. First, Northeastern's acceptance rate now sits right alongside — even slightly below — three Ivy League schools. Second, its SAT band runs a notch lower than theirs: 1440–1540 versus 1500+ at the Ivies. That gap is the tell. Northeastern is brutally hard to get into, but its admitted scores sit just below the Ivies — which means the crush is driven by sheer application volume, not by a student body that out-tests Brown.
The practical lesson: selectivity and admitted-score strength are two different axes. A school can be harder to get into than an Ivy and admit slightly lower scores at the same time. Reputation tells you neither number.
