Here is the sentence that reorders most students' assumptions about Duke: a 1500 SAT puts you in the bottom quarter of admitted students.
Not the bottom quarter of applicants. Of admits — the people who got in.
The band
Duke's reported middle 50% for admitted students is 1500–1570 (IPEDS/CDS data). Three-quarters of admits scored 1500 or higher; a quarter scored above 1570. Average admitted GPA runs about 3.95, which at most American high schools means an A record with maybe one A- somewhere the transcript hopes you won't notice.
Bands like this get misread in a hopeful direction. Students see "1500–1570" and think my 1510 is inside the range, so I'm competitive. The correct reading is colder: at a school where the 25th percentile is 1500, your 1510 makes you unremarkable. It clears the bar and then does nothing else for you. The application has to be carried by everything that isn't the score.
The rate underneath the band
Duke's acceptance rate in the most recent College Scorecard reporting is 5.7%, down from 8.9% in 2018. The trajectory: 8.9% → 7.6% → 7.7% → 5.9% → 6.4% → 6.8% → 5.7%. Applications climbed from 35,786 to over 50,000 in five years while admits drifted down from ~3,190 to ~3,170.
Combine the two facts and the picture sharpens: roughly 19 out of 20 applicants are rejected, and the admitted twentieth mostly scored 1500+. The SAT at Duke isn't a differentiator. It's a ticket check at the door of a room where the actual competition happens over essays, rigor, and what you've built outside class.
Should you submit your score?
Duke remains test-optional, which creates a genuine decision at the margins:
1520+: Submit. You're at or above the median of admits; the score can only corroborate.
1480–1510: Submit, cautiously. You're at the low edge of the band. The score won't hurt you, but understand it isn't helping either — it's neutral.
Below 1450: The math favors withholding. When 75% of admits are at 1500+, a 1430 answers a question the reader didn't need answered. Let your GPA and rigor speak without a number attached.
The uncomfortable truth about test-optional at sub-6% schools: "optional" is real, but the admitted class's scores didn't get lower. The band stayed at 1500–1570. Optional changed who submits, not who gets in.
Where Duke belongs on your list
Classify Duke as a far reach for nearly every profile — including 1570 scorers. That is not pessimism; it's what 5.7% means. A perfect application at Duke is a lottery ticket with better odds than most lottery tickets, and it should be surrounded on your list by schools where your 1500 lands in the top quarter of admits rather than the bottom one. (For calibration: there are dozens of excellent universities where a 1500 clears the 75th percentile. The list-building question isn't "can I get into Duke?" — it's "what happens to my year if I don't?")
