A Low Acceptance Rate Isn't a High Bar

Here is a quiz. One university admits 12% of its applicants. Another admits almost 80%. Which one has the higher academic bar?

If you answered the 12% school, the federal data would like a word.

The 12% school is College of the Ozarks, a work college in Missouri where students pay no tuition. In 2022 it received 2,239 applications and admitted 473. Its admitted SAT range is 1050–1220. The near-80% school is the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities: 38,050 applications in 2022, an admit rate near 80% today — and an admitted SAT range of 1300–1500.

The school that rejects seven of every eight applicants has the lower score bar. The school that says yes to four of five has admits who score like candidates at far more selective places.

An acceptance rate measures the pool. The score range measures the bar. They are two different instruments, and they routinely disagree.

The high-rate, high-bar schools

Across the 649 universities in our catalog, 401 admit more than 55% of applicants. Seven of them still have an admitted SAT floor of 1300 or higher — meaning three quarters of their admitted students scored above 1300:

None of these will impress anyone at a dinner party where admit rates are the currency. All of them enroll classes whose test profile overlaps with schools charging ten points of admit rate for the privilege.

The low-rate, low-bar schools

Now the other direction. Fifty-one universities in the catalog admit fewer than 15% of applicants. How many of them have an admitted 75th percentile at or below 1350 — a bar most strong-but-not-stellar testers clear?

Exactly one: College of the Ozarks.

That asymmetry is the real finding. A modest bar with a tiny admit rate is rare, and when it happens there is usually a structural reason — in this case, free tuition creating demand that has nothing to do with test scores. But a generous admit rate with a serious bar is not rare at all. It is sitting in plain sight at large public flagships and technical schools, filtered out of most students'' lists by a single misread number.

How to read the two numbers together

The admit rate answers: how many people want this seat, relative to how many seats exist? The score range answers: what did the people who got the seats look like? A low rate can be manufactured by demand — a free-tuition mission, a famous name, an easy application. A high rate can coexist with a demanding classroom if the pool is self-selected, the way it is at an engineering school most people never apply to casually.

If you only have time to read one number, read the range and find where you sit in it. If you have time to read two, read the rate as a statement about crowding, not quality.

Sources and caveats

Admit rates and applicant counts come from the federal IPEDS series (2022 counts shown, the most recent year with published counts). SAT ranges are the middle 50% of admitted students as reported in each college''s Common Data Set; we exclude schools where the range is estimated rather than reported. In the test-optional era a published range describes students who submitted scores, which can shift a range upward. Every figure above links to a public source on its school''s page.
